Virgin Mobile Broadband will be launching a new wireless service using the 3G mobile network in cities throughout Australia.

Using Optus’ HSDPA network as, the Virgin deal will give subscribers a monthly download limit of 4GB with speeds of up to 512kbps. The package itself will be part of the Virgin Broadband $60 a month service, which also includes a free wireless modem, unlimited calls to national landlines and free calls to other Virgin Mobile customers.

Virgin also plans to launch a new $80 a month tariff featuring a free handset and USB modem, a download limit of 1GB, plus $520 worth of calling credit. Both packages are being tailored for moderate level internet users, with both deals having restricted access to peer-to-peer networks such as Skype and file sharing sites.

Virgin Mobile Australia chief executive Matt Davey said –

“This product is not built for someone that wants to do 60GB, 70GB, 80GB a month with a lot of video streaming downloads. This is a consumer product for ordinary households that have ordinary usage.”

Virgin’s 3G service will remain largely restricted to major Australian cities, though extensive national expansion is a part of the Opus planning schedule.
